V8 Supercars Round 2 - Hamilton 400 20 April 2009 Toll HRT fight back in Race 2 The Toll Holden Racing Team duo of Garth Tander and Will Davison made an impressive fight back in Race 2 at the Hamilton 400 today, with both drivers finishing inside the top ten - Davison in seventh, Tander ninth. They both had disappointing qualifying sessions earlier today in a revised format to determine grid positions for Race 2. A red flag ended the 20 minute dash early while on their flying lap Davison relegated to start from 20th, Tander lined up next to him in 19th. From the start of the race the two charged through the field together, chipping away at position one-by-one. They both pitted within a lap of each other for tyres and fuel and after the stops were out of the way it was a race to the end. Davison leapfrogged his team-mate after the stops to sit in 11th with Tander back in 14th. A number of late race incidents allowed the two inside the top ten. Tander was closing in on local lad Greg Murphy but was unable to manoeuvre past. By lap 59 Davison claimed seventh and Tander ninth, the two happy to salvage a result and points, given where they started. Jamie Whincup won the second race and the Dick Johnson Racing pair of Steven Johnson and James Courtney filled the other two steps on the podium. Overall Davison picked up 216 Championship points, he slips back to third in the standings. Tander collected 156 points and now occupies eighth position in the Championship. The next event on the calendar is Winton in North East Victoria in two weeks time. Will Davison - #22 Toll Holden Racing Team VE Commodore (Qualifying: 20th, 1:24.7151; Race 2: 7th, 1:25.0698) It's been an up and down day for the Toll Holden Racing Team; I suppose we were the culprits of the new qualifying session earlier, but we finished seventh this afternoon, which was ok. Qualifying was very disappointing, both Garth and I had small issues out of the gate so we couldn't lay our best times down. But we made changes and were both on our best runs good enough to get somewhere up the front when the red flag came out. That's the nature of the new rule; it worked against us today, but will work for us another time. I didn't think we'd have to fight through the field like I did yesterday because I knew we had a top three/four car, but starting 12th and 20th and finishing fourth and seventh I'll take those points any day. We'll make sure we are stronger at Winton! Garth Tander - #2 Toll Holden Racing Team VE Commodore (Qualifying: 19th, 1:24.7090; Race 2: 9th, 1:25.1667) After qualifying this morning, to get back to where we finished in ninth on such a tight, unforgiving track was pretty good. We struggled in the early part of the race again for some reason and when we made a few changes to car at the pit stop my Toll HRT Commodore was fantastic. Jason Bright held me up for a couple of laps and we lost a heap of time. We never really got a handle on the car this weekend, so it's really been a case of fighting back all the time. To the Toll HRT team's credit, everyone kept fighting and we've got a lot of points and that's the main thing. It shows the resolution of this team they never give up regardless of what's going on. It would have been great to win both races, but it doesn't always happen like that. We will just have to come out blazing at Winton. Hamilton 400 Race 2 results: 1. Jamie Whincup, Team Vodafone 2.
